Code possession ends when account balance begins
| State | What can move | Main risk |
|---|---|---|
| Unused retail Wallet Code | The code can be privately delivered to the intended recipient if the product terms allow it. | Anyone who sees an unused code may try to redeem it; currency must match the recipient’s Wallet. |
| Redeemed Steam Wallet balance | Steam says the funds cannot be moved or gifted to another account. | Redeeming on the wrong account fixes the balance to that account. |
| Cash withdrawal | Steam does not describe Wallet balance as withdrawable cash. | A third-party cashout claim is outside the official Wallet use and this guide provides no workaround. |
Gifting a game or native digital card is a different action
Steam’s native Digital Gift Card is an account-to-account Wallet contribution. The recipient must accept it, and Steam says eligible cross-country gifts convert to the recipient’s currency. Steam Wallet funds cannot be used to purchase that digital gift card.
A direct game gift is also different from transferring balance: it delivers the eligible game through Steam’s gifting system rather than moving Wallet funds.
Use the remaining balance on the receiving account
If the Steam Wallet is short for an eligible purchase, Steam can ask for another payment method for the remainder. Check recent purchase history if the visible balance changed unexpectedly, and use Steam Support for account-specific issues.
Confirm the account, Wallet currency and code format. Paying the retailer with crypto never creates a balance-transfer right.
