What happens after gift-card redemption
Microsoft uses its Redeem Code flow for Microsoft and Xbox gift cards, download codes and tokens. When the code is a stored-value gift card, redemption adds the value to the signed-in Microsoft account. That balance stays tied to the account and jurisdiction where it was redeemed.
What can the balance pay for?
The balance can fund eligible goods and services at participating Microsoft stores, including Xbox. That statement does not guarantee that every game, add-on, hardware item or subscription is eligible in every jurisdiction.
A named Game Pass membership is a subscription product. Do not use “Xbox gift card” and “Game Pass code” as synonyms, and do not assume a generic balance can always purchase a particular subscription.
How partial payment works
If non-promotional balance is insufficient for an eligible purchase, Microsoft says another registered payment method can pay the remainder. This happens in the Microsoft purchase flow after the gift-card balance has been redeemed; it is separate from the crypto payment used to buy the card.
Xbox balance questions
Does every Microsoft balance have no expiry?
No. The official no-expiry statement is for non-promotional balance. Check separate terms attached to promotional credit.
Can I convert Xbox balance to another currency?
No. Microsoft says the balance cannot be converted to another currency.
Can account balance pay part of a purchase?
For an eligible purchase, another registered payment method can cover the remainder when the balance is insufficient.
