Credit and membership solve different jobs

Xbox: flexible balance or Game Pass?
A Microsoft or Xbox gift card adds stored value after redemption. Non-promotional balance does not expire, and another registered payment method can cover the remainder of an eligible purchase. The balance cannot be converted to another currency.
Xbox Game Pass is a separate subscription. Choose a product explicitly named for the intended plan and duration. Recurring billing is enabled by default for subscriptions bought through Xbox, but do not assume a third-party code has the same billing behavior; check the exact product terms.

PlayStation: voucher type and family account matter
A 12-digit PlayStation voucher may represent wallet funds, content or a subscription. Confirm the exact type before redemption. A child account has no separate wallet, so wallet top-up vouchers must be redeemed on the family manager’s account; the family manager can set a monthly spending limit. Some subscription vouchers require a valid payment method on the account.
Whichever type you choose, its region must match the PlayStation account region. PlayStation says the account country or region cannot be changed after creation.

Which is safer when I do not know the recipient’s preferred game?
Stored value is usually the more flexible format because the recipient chooses an eligible purchase. You still need the correct account market and currency.
Does an Xbox gift card always buy Game Pass?
No universal promise should be made. Stored value and a named Game Pass product are different; participating-store restrictions, account jurisdiction and the exact product matter.
Can a PlayStation child account hold wallet funds?
No. PlayStation says a child account has no separate wallet; the family manager redeems wallet credit and controls the child’s spending limit.
